[Review] Acid Mothers Reynols – Vol. 3

Acid Mothers Reynols‘ “Vol. 3” is a project combining the prolific Argentine band Reynols and Japanese masters Acid Mothers Temple. Recorded during AMT‘s 2017 South American tour in Buenos Aires, it contains 4 tracks ranging from 7 to over 12 minutes in length released on May 17, 2024 via VHF Records. The opening track “Kicking Air Bricks” combines the tradition of Experimental music with a Psychedelic touch, with a retro imprint but a modern twist. The track is rich in sound cues and modulations, immediately immersing us in the sounds of this project and album. A weave of sounds in a constant crescendo, exploring the different facets that the two bands have managed to fuse, also enriched with penetrating and Avant-Garde vocal parts. The following track “Multiverse Turtle Reflex” offers over 9 minutes of pure experimentation with electronic sounds and cleverly modulated effects. A complex and conceptual track, it takes us to explore the more elaborate sounds the project has to offer. The keyboards and effects dialogue to perfection, revealing different and interesting cues with each listening, not easy to approach but certainly enhancing technique and the search for new sounds. “Smelling Oneiric Asado” is the shortest in duration, still reaching seven minutes. A background of layering, hypnotic and enveloping keyboards intertwine with the vocals. The track builds to a crescendo of intensity and adds an elaborate rhythm section that is enriched with effects. In the finale, the band incorporates elements of Jazz, again with an Avant-Garde imprint and rich in sound experimentation. The album’s longest track “Lemurian Tsunami Inside a Hat” concludes the listening experience. With a more energetic rhythm section, very elaborate and full of tempo changes, it shows the band’s heavier side, between Rock, progressive and Experimental. The vocal parts enrich the track, intertwining with the rich keyboard textures and continuous tempo changes of the rhythm section. An interesting collaboration between two bands that have enriched the musical landscape in the field of Experimentation. The tracklist offers four long tracks that explore the different facets of both bands, managing to incorporate elements of both while building a very personal sound. A recommended listen for all lovers of the more Experimental sounds of Prog, with forays into Psychedelia and Prog, always in search of new and avant-garde sounds.
