The band states:
We are thrilled to announce the release of our new album, ‘Uniomisty’! This record features incredible guest performances by world-renowned keyboardist Derek Sherinian (ex-Dream Theater) and Japanese prog legend Kunio Suma (Bikyouran). We hope you enjoy this epic musical journey!
The long-awaited new album “Uniomisty” by Project Nayuta will finally be released, nearly four years after their previous work. As Madoka Tsukada declared following the last album — “If you’re a rock band, a double concept album is something you must eventually aim for.” True to that vision, the new release takes shape as a monumental two-disc work, consisting of 11 tracks and running approximately 90 minutes.
Concept albums are highly artistic works that combine structural sophistication with strong narrative elements. At the same time, they have often produced challenging and thought-provoking masterpieces, frequently embedding social commentary within their themes. “Uniomisty” clearly belongs to this lineage. Rather than merely paying homage or mechanically inheriting the format, the album emerges as an ambitious work that seeks to add a new page to the history of the form.
The contemporary Japanese Progressive Rock scene is in a rather rare and remarkable situation on a global scale: veteran artists who have been active since the 1970s and 1980s continue to coexist alongside a new generation that has emerged in the 21st century, both maintaining a strong presence. Because the scene has evolved without rupture, this environment naturally allows for works that can summarize an era while building a bridge toward the future.
For the recording of this album, Project Nayuta assembled a lineup that blends younger musicians with seasoned veterans. Alongside Madoka Tsukada and vocalist Mika Tsukimoto, as well as members who have been part of the project since Junko Sera’s first album, the band welcomed Ryotaro Shigemoto (Olympus Head) on drums and Hideki Kuritani (formerly of Kinzoku Ebisu) on guitar—two representatives of a younger generation of talent. Additionally, bassist Takumi Kokubun, leader of the long-running progressive band Kikuratemensis with nearly twenty years of activity behind them, joined the lineup.
The album also features an impressive roster of guest musicians. Kunio Suma of Bi Kyo Ran, whose 2025 release received widespread acclaim, makes an appearance, along with Derek Sherinian (ex-Dream Theater / Sons of Apollo). This collaboration transcends both generational and national boundaries. Beyond its immediate impact in terms of name recognition, the lineup can be seen as a deliberate and meaningful choice — one that symbolically brings together the past, present, and future of Japanese Progressive Rock within a single work.
Among the eleven tracks included in the album are several compositions that had previously been performed live as standalone pieces. However, hearing them within the completed studio arrangements and in their intended sequence is likely to create a markedly different impression compared to their live renditions. Supported by the formidable technical abilities of both the band and the guest musicians, the performances are intense and electrifying, leaving the listener little room to breathe throughout the full 90-minute journey.
The album also highlights the band’s distinctive twin-vocal approach. The two vocalists skillfully employ a wide range of tonal colors and vocal techniques, enhancing the expressive depth of the music and further emphasizing one of the ensemble’s most characteristic features.
The Progressive Rock band Providence, once led by Madoka Tsukada and considered one of Japan’s representative acts in the genre, was formed in 1985 and released their first cassette, “Densetsu o Katarite” (“Telling the Legend”), in 1986. Now, forty years later, in 2026, a new legend is about to be born. — Nobumitsu Iwaisaki / (祝前伸光)
