Released in 1972 on bacillus records, Dschinn is the sole album by German band Dschinn and today ranks among the most sought-after Heavy underground releases of the early Krautrock era.
Originating from the Marburg region in Hesse, the group evolved from the local beat and psychedelic scene of the late 1960s. Emerging from earlier formations including The Dischas, Dschinn gradually developed a heavier and more distinctive sound that combined Hard Rock, Blues, Psychedelia and Progressive influences. By the time of their only album, the band had forged a powerful musical identity that stood apart from both British Hard Rock and the more Cosmic strands of Krautrock.
Led by guitarist Bernd Capito and vocalist Peter Lorenz, the band delivered a remarkably confident collection of songs ranging from the riff-driven opener “Freedom” and the Dark, Heavy “Fortune” to the Atmospheric “Smile Of The Devil” and the energetic “I Wanna Know.” While often classified as Krautrock, many collectors and reviewers have noted that the album is equally rooted in Heavy Blues Rock and proto-Metal, placing it alongside some of the harder and more guitar-oriented productions released on bacillus records during the early 1970s.
The track “Let’s Go Together” reached a new audience decades later when it was featured in the acclaimed television series Better Call Saul, introducing the music of Dschinn to listeners far beyond the traditional Krautrock and collector communities.
Included here as a bonus track is “Rock’N’Roll Dschinny,” originally released in 1973 on the bacillus records compilation “Mama Rock & The Sons Of Rock ‘n’ Roll – German Rock Scene Part 2” (BLS 5526). The track represents one of the very few additional recordings associated with the band and provides an important complement to their sole studio album.
Over the decades, Dschinn has gradually acquired cult status among collectors of German Heavy Rock, Hard Psych and underground Progressive music. Original bacillus pressings are highly sought after, while the album continues to be celebrated for its powerful guitar work, memorable songwriting and unique position between Heavy Rock, Psychedelia, and Krautrock.
Originally released in 1972, Dschinn remains one of the hidden gems of the bacillus records catalogue.
