Released in 1974, “We’re The Tiger Bunch” was the second and final studio album by Tiger B. Smith, the Hard-Rock trio led by guitarist and vocalist Holger Schmidt. The band’s roots reached back to the German Beat scene of the 1960s, when Schmidt and drummer Karl-Heinz Traut first began playing together in groups such as The Groove and White Face before later emerging as Second Life.
Following the release of their debut album “Tiger Rock” on Vertigo in 1972, Tiger B. Smith developed into one of the most active touring Rock bands in Germany, performing throughout Central Europe and building a reputation for powerful live shows. While firmly rooted in Hard Rock, the group combined Heavy guitar riffs with Psychedelic and Progressive elements, placing them somewhere between the German underground scene and the international Rock sound of the early 1970s.
We’re “The Tiger Bunch” expanded on the approach of the debut album through the addition of guest musicians, including guitarist Rainer Marz, keyboard player Veit Marvos, saxophonist and flautist Hanus Berka, and drummer Curt Cress. The result is a dynamic and surprisingly varied album that moves comfortably between driving Hard Rock, Melodic Progressive passages and Blues-based Heavy Psych.
More than fifty years after its original release on bacillus, “We’re The Tiger Bunch” remains a fascinating document of a period when German Rock bands were developing their own identity while confidently competing on international stages.
