[Interview] Exclusive interview with Weedevil

Dear readers, in this article we have the pleasure to offer you an interview with a Brazilian band that fuses Stoner sounds with Doom Metal, with a new album on the way. Please welcome Weedevil.

Hello, how are you?

Flavio Cavichioli: “We’re doing great, thanks! We’re excited about our new album release and happy to be here for this interview.

What meaning does the name of your band Weedevil have for you?

Flavio Cavichioli: “The name Weedevil is a blend of “weed” and “evil,” reflecting our love for cannabis and the dark, heavy sound of Doom Metal. It’s a tribute to our stoner influences and the mysticism that runs through our music.

You offer a mixture of Stoner and Doom Metal, where does your passion for these sounds come from?

Flavio Cavichioli: “Our passion for Stoner and Doom Metal comes from a mix of our musical influences and personal experiences. We’re inspired by iconic bands like Black Sabbath and Electric Wizard, and we aim to create a sound that captures both the intensity and emotional depth of these genres.

What are your main sources of inspiration?

Flavio Cavichioli: “My main sources of inspiration come from a long personal journey connecting with the occult and the unknown. This journey began in the 80s, influenced by Black Sabbath and pioneering Black Metal bands like Slayer, Venom, Possessed, and Celtic Frost. I’ve been deeply inspired by these sounds ever since I received my first Black Sabbath vinyl when I was 11.

Your album ‘Profane Smoke Ritual’ is out now via Smolder Brains Records, how would you describe this new work?

Flavio Cavichioli: “We’d describe “Profane Smoke Ritual” as a deep dive into the mysteries of spirituality and liberation. It blends elements of Stoner and Doom Metal, creating a unique fusion of styles. Each track aims to make a significant impact, encouraging deep thoughts and a spiritual connection. The album cover art by Lie Design combines elements inspired by Aleister Crowley’s philosophy with visual references from Greek paintings dedicated to Dionysus and Bacchic rituals, symbolizing the connection between the divine and the earthly.

Your vocals are punchy and intense, what themes do the lyrics deal with?

Flavio Cavichioli: “Our lyrics deal with themes of spirituality, liberation, and mystery. We explore concepts of transcendence and reflections on existence. For instance, the song “Profane Smoke Ritual” portrays a journey of spiritual liberation through rituals and experiences with cannabis smoke.

A gritty rhythm section and well-constructed riffs, how does the creative process of your music take place?

Flavio Cavichioli: “In Weedevil, our creative process often starts with creating the beat and atmosphere of the song. I like to start by creating the atmosphere with the drums. Then we add the guitar riffs to complement the melody. Our composition is quite intuitive and free, which adds a unique touch to our sound. Jimmy Olden’s contribution on guitar was crucial for this album. Each band member brought their own unique input, with Henrique Bittencourt providing heavy riffs, Cláudio HC Funari adding depth with the bass, and Poison bringing a special touch with her vocals.

Your sound is energetic and I was wondering if there will be a chance to hear you live in the near future, do you have plans in this regard?

Flavio Cavichioli: “Yes, we’re looking forward to bringing our sound live to our fans. We’re planning a series of shows and festival appearances in the coming months. Keep an eye on our social media for updates on dates and locations.”

The band formed in 2019 and you have released several works, how has your sound evolved over these 5 years?

Flavio Cavichioli: “Over these five years, our sound has evolved significantly. We started with a strong base in Doom Metal and over time incorporated elements of Stoner and Heavy Metal. The recent lineup change brought renewed energy and new creative dynamics, enriching our sound even further. With this new lineup, we’ve aimed to add the weight of heavy metal to our doom essence, resulting in a unique fusion of styles.

How do you see the music scene in heavy territory in your country and more generally in South America?

Flavio Cavichioli: “The heavy metal scene in Brazil and South America is vibrant and full of talent. There are so many incredible bands emerging, and the fan community is extremely passionate. We’re proud to be part of this scene and to contribute with our music.

What advice would you give to young artists approaching music in a genre like yours?

Flavio Cavichioli: “Our advice to young artists is to follow your passions and stay true to your artistic vision. Don’t be afraid to experiment and explore new sounds. Dedication and authenticity are key to creating music that truly resonates with people.

Do you have any other activities or artistic passions outside of music?

Flavio Cavichioli: “Besides music, many of us are interested in other forms of art like painting, writing, and cinema. These additional passions often influence our creative approach and enrich our work in the band.

I thank Weedevil for the interview, wishing them all the best for the continuation of their artistic career.
