The LP will be coming out via longtime Toronto imprint Barnyard Records, who has meticulously documented out-jazz and experimental music within Canada and beyond for the good part of the past twenty years, with recordings from the likes of Veryan Weston, Drumheller, the Element Choir, Anthony Braxton and Kyle Brenders, Lori Freedman and Scott Thompson, Colin Fisher, and the late, great Justin Haynes.
stef.in offers an imaginative take on Avant-Rock, using a sturdy, strident foundation to anchor a colorful array of sonic excursions. Drummer and composer Stefan Hegerat (Parade, Fortunato Durutti Marinetti, Chinese Medicine) provides the band’s leadership and vision, but it’s the abstracted microtonal guitars of Patrick O’Reilly (collaborator to Language Arts, Christine Duncan, and the late Justin Haynes) and Robyn Gray (Jessica Ackerley, Colin Hinton, Ky (Constellation)) that imbue the outfit with its characteristic restless volatility. Bassist Mark Godfrey is the bridge between Hegerat‘s percussion and the guitars, with his focused rhythmic sensibility, eloquent melodicism, and naturally, his penchant for adventure. Icterus II is the vibrant sequel to their first recording (whose name I’m certain you can guess!)
