Hailing from Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA, we find Progressive Metal/Rock quartet Blind Man’s Daughter, and they have an excellent new ten track album out now called “Sundressed” which clocks in at around thirty-two minutes long, and it is the bands sophomore release which is about singer Ashley Wolfe‘s life. Musically it is a complex album with the band drawing on modern Progressive Metal.
If you like bands like Periphery, Dream Theater, Caligula’s Horse, Stream Of Passion, Yngwie Malmsteen, and even Katatonia then you will enjoy this album.
“Mirage Harmer” opens the album and this song is a heavy bombastic opener, the music is quite technical and complex and Ashley puts in a towering vocal performance, the song at times can be quite melodic, but for the most this song is Heavy. “Sundressed” is heavier with a more Prog Metal power house bite, the vocals are quite up there in parts of the song. “Saeancer” is one of my favorite songs on the records, its upbeat and catchy and along the lines of Xandria and Delain. It is a gain a very complex song, with added growly demonic vocals. This song really bursts out of the speakers, thank to the heavy musicality, it has a Modern Metal feel, yet flows with techy prog metal, this is a massive song.
“Kyhell” is darker with razor sharp riffage from Dan Grosse. It’s quite a sonic piece that has a hypnotic feel where the song just pulls you in. “Bloodmoon” is another of the albums best songs, this song is more subtle with a jazzy atmospheric prog edge. Ashley on this song sounds sensational. On the song “Days Fall” Ashley‘s pushes her voice putting in a towering vocal performance that again pulls you in, whilst the song is set ablaze thanks to the intense guitar work, this is a fabulous diverse song, and my overall favorite song of the album.
“Dust & Light” is quite a magnificent song with deep vocals from Ashley. The song starts off almost narrative and soothing before bursting with exciting instrumental experimental bombastic Prog Metal before it dies down again with subtle vocals. This is a spacey and grand track. The instrumental “Dust” sounds quite mysterious with its tribal and de-tuned guitar soundcapes, whilst “Nights Fall” offers very impressive high pitched vocals, its quite melodic as well as bombastic Dream Theater inspire Prog Metal, there is a lot going on here to soak up.
The album ends with “Waves” is a magnificent song that takes you on a journey, its vibrant and full of bombastic musical energy which as always is quite complex, there is a catchy groove to this song.
Overall Blind Man’s Daughter have conjured up an excellent album of diversity laced across the progressive metal spectrum, Ashley’s towering vocals add mystique to the songs, she has enough power to keep the balloons afloat sky high at Albuquerque’s International Balloon Fiesta. A band to keep your eyes on.
