Bordeaux, France based Progressive Post-Metallers Matrass published the official lyric video for the track “Journey” taken from upcoming new album “Cathedrals” due out on May 17, 2024 via La Tangente Label.
While “Silence” and “Appetite For Comfort” were unveiled in 2023 in the form of exclusive live sessions, here’s “Journey,” ready to hit all platforms on Friday April 19th! A attractive glimpse of what “Cathedrals,” the band’s debut album out on May 17th (La Tangente Label), has in the guts. A must for fans of The Ocean, Spiritbox, Rolo Tomassi and Psychonaut!

With “Cathedrals,” Matrass have set their entire metamorphosis in stone. No more talk of Stoner or Fusion, for the Bordeaux quintet have made their mark with a Progressive Post-Metal that’s as demanding as it is crossbred, as full of beautiful ambient flights as it is of big, life-saving riffs. “Journey” encapsulates all this, combining dizzying heaviness with hints of Post-Rock guitars. And let’s not forget the sensitive vocals, alternating between clean and saturated. “My actions curing my fears”, Clémentine Browne sings, evoking the acceptance of fear in order to overcome it. A leap into the void, a first in the process of reclaiming oneself, or the main theme of “Cathedrals!”
Victor Roger, the band’s guitarist and co-composer of the album with his colleague Simon Michot, tells us a little more about the genesis of this single:
“Journey” was originally a 6-string song with a more post rock structure, but it was too close to what we were doing before. I started by adapting it to 7 strings to get more coherence and heaviness with the other songs in the set. I think this track combines a lot of melody, a lot of texture, a lot of sound research with very effective bass-drums and an almost radio-friendly chorus, which is rare for us. I made a lot of changes to the structure – we went from 3 to 8 versions within a week. But I’m happy with the result because it’s a rather unusual format for us, more frontal and shorter. You get a better grasp of the information! Its climax is quite close to “Appetite For Comfort” in terms of polyrhythm, notably under the influence of Humanity’s Last Breath. I wanted more modern riffing. It’s also something new for us, more technical and sophisticated in terms of rhythm.
“Journey” is illustrated with and hypnotizing (and satisfying !) lyric video made by artist Sandy Wegfliegen.
