Italian Progressive Rock band Narrow Street explores the fear of judgement in their self-titled single released today via Ænima Recordings. The song title “Narrow Street” symbolises the way life narrows our minds through fear. Lyrically, the song focuses on fear of others’ judgement, worrying too much about others, or because of others, being afraid of their gaze and judgement. Focusing only on oneself is a failure, because we lose our way and end up in a kind of perdition.

As with the lyrics focused on the feeling of tension, the music of “Narrow Street” follows suit as it intentionally instils feelings of claustrophobia in the listener from the beginning until almost the end. In true Progressive Rock style, the song includes many twists and turns and features a guitar solo and many bridges. “Narrow Street” leaves the listener guessing what will happen next, while keeping the atmosphere closed to fit the overall theme of the song. Right at the end, the chorus shatters the accumulated tension and symbolises the explosion of anger built up over a lifetime of suppressed fear.
Narrow Street is a Progressive Rock-inspired project with metal overtones, with lyrics and music by Francesco Demaria. The journey into composition began in 2012, with the author/composer’s vision and joy, as well as a challenge in terms of compositional skills and musical vision, all with a highly personal touch. This effort has produced a significant number of songs, song sections or even just ideas over the years. Demaria recorded a selection of these songs in the summer of 2020 with the aim of releasing them and sharing them with the world.
After entering the studio, Narrow Street discovered the right path to take, one that felt intensely personal, one that the author lived and was eager to talk about. This led to the construction of a unified work, with a common thread linking the parts together, rather than a true concept album. Demaria chose to convey the emotions he felt in various situations: beautiful and even challenging emotions that most of us will experience at some point in our lives.
The lyrics evolved and the compositions played a crucial role in adapting to these themes, most likely because the author was already explaining what was going on in his head on a subconscious level, and both the music and the sounds fit well. The entire body of the work is united by a dominant theme: our lived emotional experiences – worries, uncertainties, anxieties, panic attacks, but also a desire for rebirth, finding a new path and continuous personal progress despite everything.
“Narrow Street” was recorded by Samuele Forte. Mixed and mastered by Mattia Garimanno at Ænima Recordings. The band’s logo is by Paolo Vallerga. The artwork was created by Cisco Dan.
