With their live performances getting you as close to real magic as you can get, Sans Froid are undeniably one of the UK’s most exciting bands. The Froid’s intent is clear, to make you feel like you’re not the only one going crazy. Since the release of their debut album “Hello, Boil Brain,” Bristol-based Art Rock outfit Sans Froid have steadily earned acclaim from underground tastemakers including renowed radios and magazines, alongside standout live appearances at ArcTanGent, Simple Things, Strangeforms and Portals, plus support slots for alternative heavyweights Maybeshewill and Foxing.
Sans Froid have been busy in their laboratory, experimenting with all manner of musical influences and are now ready to explode forth with their sophomore LP “Back into the Womb.” A triumphant declaration that even in the year 2026, it is still possible to create something uniquely original and fresh sounding. On this record the listener can find Soul, Jazz, Folk, Progressive Rock, Math Rock, and much, much more. All sitting comfortable and proudly under the banner of Sans Froid, a group of accomplished musicians, whose musical prowess is matched by their seamless ability at conjuring abstract and thought provoking themes within their lyrics and artwork.
“Thematically, the songs all have metaphorical nudges toward patriarchal existence, blindly and internally manoeuvring overwhelming division and just trying to do the best you can with the crumbs you have. We don’t ever set out to have themes, but this is what always seems to be the undercurrent in the end” – Aisling
The band is comprised of Aisling Trafford providing Keys/synth and her powerful yet soulful voice,Toby Green on Drums, Charles Barnes on Guitar and Benjamin Harris on bass, with all three providing backing vocals. When the quartet is going full tilt it sounds like 40 people as opposed to 4.
“Unlike ‘Hello, Boil Brain’, this album was a much more collaborative writing process. I (Ais) wanted to play less keys with the hope of focusing more on voice exploration, the boys were mega open to this and as always helped to craft my circus like riff ideas & mad gal ramblings to the wild tunes they’ve become. Toby’s mastermind abilities to write the initial ideas for Still Thinking, Bags Packed, Thorns and Go On have meant that this album is a complete wave of collaboration, which feels like a huge injection of flavour in comparison to our first album. Towards the end of our writing process, our silent 5th member Ben Green (recording engineer & producer) joined us for some sessions, helping to trim, mould and bend the tracks to their final state. We couldn’t be more proud of what we’ve made together. Live, Laugh, Froid” – Aisling
“Back into the Womb” is an undeniably joyous listen, but much like the world we inhabit, the beauty on display is interspersed with unavoidable moments of chaos and passages of unease. Take it all in and block nothing out, you’ll be much richer for it.
“I feel like the general vibe is that this band is the outlet that keeps our creative heads above water, no matter what heart wrenching madness is going in the world, when we play these tunes together everything dissipates and feels temporarily grand” – Aisling
The latest single “Go On” highlights the uphill battle that it can be for a non-male person, and how one navigates through the world which quite often feels against them.
“Go On is about having to over exercise and explain the right to be present as a non-male person. Having it proper wallop your confidence as a human and music person but just trying to crack on anyway and recognising through conversation that most other non-male people go through similar vibes in their artistic lives…so, kinda community, but also bleughhh“ – Sans Froid
“Back into the Womb” is set for release on June 26th via Church Road Records.
