Swami Lateplate, the Heavy and Experimental Jazz duo formed by New York musicians Bobby Previte on trap drums and Jamie Saft on synths and organs. “Doom Jazz II” continues the epic story of the Doom Jazz saga by trading the slow, sensual lines of “Doom Jazz I” for a more active, muscular sound. Side One, “The New Friend” and “Everyone is Aware” uses a vintage Yamaha organ to create an atmosphere of mystery and space. Side Two, “Deception” moves into different territory, with Saft’s distorted Hammond Organ sailing over Previte‘s active, commanding tom-toms in a blues-based jam of wild ferocity and intense foreboding. Bobby Previte is a composer and performer whose work explores the nexus between notated and improvised music. One of the seminal figures of the 1980s New York ‘Downtown’ scene, Previte is the recipient of the 2015 Greenfield Prize for music and was a Guggenheim Foundation Fellow in 2012. He has received multiple awards for composition from the NEA, NYFA, NYSCA, New Music USA, The Jerome Foundation, The New York State Music Fund, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, and the American Music Center. Mr. Previte has been an artist-in-residence at the Rockefeller Foundation in Bellagio, Italy, Civitella Ranieri, The Montalvo Arts Center, The Hermitage Artist Retreat, and nine times at the MacDowell Colony.
Jamie Saft is a virtuoso pianist, keyboardist, producer, and composer from NY. His work has been featured with Iggy Pop, Beastie Boys, Bad Brains, The B-52’s, Roswell Rudd, John Zorn, John Adams, Laurie Anderson, Antony & the Johnsons, and more. He scored the Oscar-nominated “Murderball” and Sundance winner “God Grew Tired Of Us.”
The “Doom Jazz II” album was entirely produced by Bobby Previte and Jamie Saft, recorded and mixed by Jamie Saft at Potterville International Sound, NY and mastered by Christian Castagno in Minca, Colombia. The artwork was designed by Hadi Nasiri.
