[Review] Cactustache – One Way Mission EP

Cactustache a new power trio hailing from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, offering Stoner and Desert Rock sounds. The debut EP entitled “One Way Mission” was released on December 05, 2024 and contains three tracks between 4 and 5 minutes long. A deep bass line opens the album and “The Navigator,” the first track, features distorted, well-constructed guitar riffs and a solid rhythm section. The band’s Heavy Rock imprinting is immediately highlighted, with a granitic and engaging sound, while the vocals are dynamic and expressive, with engaging melodic refrains. In the second part, the guitar comes to the fore in the instrumental section with a solo insert, and then the vocals return for the last verses and endings. “Last Starfighter” is characterised by more Psycheliche sounds than the previous one, always starting from a Stoner Rock style, and then incorporating their own personal style. Gloomy traits and a dark vocal characterise the sound, which explores different genres and styles, interweaving intense vocal and instrumental parts. In the second half, the band develops an intense instrumental section, with the bass first and the guitar later starring in fine solo insects. An interesting blend of Stoner, Heavy Rock and Doom with modern traits and a personal style. The longest track ‘One Way Mission’ concludes the album, exceeding five minutes in length. A track that continues to explore the sounds of the previous one, mixing Heavy Rock, Stoner and with forays into Doom, with distorted guitars and a dark sound. The vocals are dynamic and expressive and intertwine with the distinctly heavy instrumental parts. Developing an interesting and sophisticated instrumental section with the lead guitar in evidence and enriched by tempo changes, the band takes us to the finale of this enjoyable listen. A good debut, introducing us to the Heavy Rock sound of this band, which incorporates elements of Stoner and Doom into its sound. The instrumental textures intertwine with the intense vocal parts, prpoposing three solid, well-constructed tracks. A good listen for lovers of new heavy Rock sounds, contaminated by Stoner and Doom, a good start for this band.
