Electric Wires is an Italian power trio formed in 2023, offering Progressive and Post-Rock instrumental sounds, crossing the boundaries between genres in their styles. The self-titled debut album was released on February 28, 2025 via Luminol Records and contains 10 tracks ranging from 2 to over 6 minutes in length. The album opens with the track “Mastodontic Pig,” which we enjoyed as a single taken to anticipate the release. Thoughtful guitar riffs characterise the sound with a solid and elaborate rhythm section, enhancing the excellent mixtures between the instruments of this power trio. Continuous tempo changes and solo guitar inserts embellish the sound, exploring sounds between Progressive Rock and incursions into Heavy Music, with a fresh and modern touch. After the crescendo that concluded the previous one, “Another Planet” opens with dreamy guitar arpeggios, which evolves into a granitic Rock instrumental with the entrance of the rhythm section. Prog traits mix with Post-Rock, with the guitar playing the lead role in fine layering and solo interventions. The intensity increases as the song progresses, in a crescendo that culminates in the incorporation of heavier elements and refined guitar work. “Left Alive” is a shorter track in duration, coming in at almost a minute, The band explores here sounds more Psot-Rock oriented, dreamy and with a more delicate imprinting. An interesting mixture of more classic Rock sounds and the band’s modern touch, which offers an emotional guitar solo in the finale. The experimental interlude “Interstellar Space,” offers two minutes of percussion, ambient sounds and modulations and effects. We are halfway through the tracklist with “Teddy Killer” featuring a granitic sound with heavy guitar riffs alternating with more Progressive and delicate openings. The tempo changes and rich instrumental textures are definitely the strong point of the track, which in the second half returns to more heavy sounds to conclude with the incisive riffs of the opening. A funky rhythm section characterises “Electric Wires,” an energetic track that enhances the band’s compositional and performance technique, creating an engaging and dynamic sound. The guitar is the protagonist of rich solo interventions that accompany us for the entire duration of the piece, to then leave room for a brief bass insert. “Utopia” is another solid and intense piece of instrumental Rock with interweaving Progressive and Post-Rock, with forays into Heavy sounds. The rhythm section is constantly evolving, allowing the guitar to develop intense solo textures, and then in the second half explore more Atmospheric and Experimental sounds. The finale returns to a Heavy Prog that concludes the track. The longest track on the album, “Breakfast at Pliny’s,” which exceeds 6 minutes in length, is the perfect meeting point between Progressive and Post-Rock. The band enhances its style through the development of intense instrumental textures, melodic openings, skillfully modulated effects and the blending of different genres by enhancing compositional and performing technique. The band explores the more Progressive side in “Ciro’s Diet,” alternating technical passages with a frenetic rhythm section with others that are always very elaborate, keeping the intensity high. In the finale, the guitar offers a solo intervention with virtuoso traits, concluding the piece. The album ends with “Dystopia,” a short passage with ethereal and Experimental sounds. An album of instrumental Progressive and Post-Rock with the guitar as the protagonist and solid, elaborate rhythm sections. Through the long instrumental textures this power trio develops intense themes alternating between more ethereal and heavier passages. A recommended listen for lovers of instrumental sounds straddling Post-Rock and Progressive, with a fresh and modern style.
