Halo Vair is the studio project founded in 2017 by Canadian multi-instrumentalist Victor Zohni who proposes Neo-Psychedelic Rock. Inspired by modern groups such as Tame Imapala and King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, the artist has managed to transport the atmosphere of the late 60s to the present day. On December 12, 2021 he released the self-produced debut EP “Definition” containing 6 medium length tracks. The “Lost In A Haze” opener starts with distorted and effect-rich guitar riffs, the rhythm session is solid and the artist immediately shows his personal style even in the vocals. A Psychedelic track halfway between Pop and Rock, where the artist is skilled in developing the theme and using the effects. The second track “Rich Man’s Hill” continues the musical discourse of the previous one, centered on acid guitar riffs and the bass is deep and load-bearing. The slow rhythm allows the sound to envelop us gently and make us travel among the melodies of the song, with a vocal with personal traits. In the central part an instrumental section with the guitar protagonist of a short solo, the vocal returns and the second part brings us to the end with another short instrumental part. “Overdose” begins with a dark guitar riff, and then develops with a vocal and acid and melancholy atmospheres with the sounds that are layered. An enveloping track that fully centers the sense of the title, with a good guitar cue in the finale and a good keyboard background. The shortest of the album “For The Sake Of Brevity” is a psychedelic Pop track, energetic and with a positive and engaging sound. More in the form of a ‘song’ it is a passage however well developed and performed with some interesting guitar phrasing. “Fly (Slow Jam)” as the title suggests is a slow rhyming track, where the artist offers dilated sounds with layers of keyboards and a hypnotic bass. More space is given to the music than to the text, allowing Victor to show his technique especially on the guitar with an extended solo. In the finale, with the return of the sung for the last verses, the piece closes. The album ends with “Tabula Rasa” the longest track with over 9 minutes of duration, which begins with a slow rhythm and mixes between guitar and keyboard. The sounds are layered and rolled up, alternating sung parts and instrumental sections with tempo changes that are a real added value for the piece. Good ideas and solo ideas that enhance the artist’s technique. An album with interesting ideas and ideas, where the artist manages to create some intense passages. This debut EP is a good starting point, offering a modern Psychedelic style with personal traits. A listening recommended for lovers of the modern Psychedelic genre with Pop influences, managing to revisit the genre in a current key.
