Heavy Velvet is a band from the USA that plays Heavy Rock with reminiscences of the late 1960s and early 1970s. The quartet consists of ex-Slow Seasons guitarist David Kent, along with powerhouse vocalist Erika Leigh, joined by energetic rhythm section Jordan Espinoza on drums and Justin Sedillo on bass. The self-produced debut EP “Scarlet” was released on December 06, 2024 and contains 3 tracks between 3 and 4 minutes long. The title-track “Scarlet” opens the album, immediately plunging us into the band’s characteristic retro Hard Rock sounds, with the powerful vocals in evidence. Distorted guitars and a solid rhythm section give groove to the sound over which Erika‘s incisive and dirty vocals interpret the lyrics with passion. A very interesting track that brings back the classic Rock atmospheres in a modern context. Powerful drumming opens “Modern Love is a Shame,” characterised by a gritty rhythm section, dirty and aggressive riffs and vocals. A Classic Rock song with fresh and modern traits, thanks to the band’s personal touch, which offers an intense and well-developed track. The band develops sounds they have already heard, to which they add their own personality, giving it an imprint that differentiates them from other projects. Concluding the tracklist is “The Itch,” which along with the preceding one were extracted as stand-alone singles. It is the longest in duration, exceeding 4 minutes and tracing the sounds of the previous one it offers a blast of Heavy Rock with distorted guitars and a scratchy, incisive vocal. The rhythm section is gritty and full of tempo changes, allowing the song to develop by mixing Classic Rock, Heavy stretches and Psychedelia between retro and modern. A good debut, showing that Rock is alive and that in bands like these exponents quality that bodes well for the future. Three tracks that bring classic atmospheres into a modern and personal context, propnendo a blend of Heavy Rock, Psychedelia and Classic Rock. The rhythm section is solid and adds groovy to the sound, the disorted guitar offers good work and well constructed riffs on which the vocalist interprets the lyrics with personality. A recommended listen for all lovers of classic Heavy Rock sounds with references to the early 70s and the modern scene, granitic and engaging.
