[Review] Mars Bluff – Pillars

Mars Bluff is a Post-Metal band from South Carolina formed in 2023. The debut EP “Pillars” was released on April 29, 2024 and contains 3 long tracks. Opener “Turn the Barrel” is characterised by heavy guitar riffs and a granitic rhythm section with load-bearing bass lines and solid, elaborate drumming. The aggressive and incisive vocals add power to the sound, alternating with good guitar work and solo inserts. An energetic track, which immediately shows the band’s musical imprinting, skilful in creating a Post-Metal sound and at times darker atmospheres. Another heavy and well-constructed guitar riff opens “Crown of Arrows,” an aggressive and powerful track. the rhythm section is gritty and tight, the vocals incisive, following the various evolutions of the central theme. The guitar is protagonist with good work and riffs, the heavy sound offers a refined Post-Metal with ideas and cues that incorporate elements of Prog. The tracklist ends with “Blood to Waste,” another long track exceeding seven minutes in length. Guitar riffs and a slow but solid rhythm section characterise the sound, over which an incisive vocal interprets the lyrics, adding power to the track. Dark atmospheres permeate the track, only to accelerate in the middle section and incorporate more heavy and metal elements to the sound. Alternating between sung verses and instrumental sections with guitar solos, the band accompanies us towards the finale, still under the banner of Post-metal and forays into Prog. A band that offers an incisive and powerful album, with heavy guitar riffs and granitic rhythm sections over which an aggressive vocal is inserted. Enriched by tempo changes, the tracks are well constructed, exploring the modern sounds of Post-Metal with forays into Progressive, alternating between sung and instrumental parts with good ideas and interesting cues. A recommended listen for lovers of Heavy sounds, a good EP for this band that offers three energetic and well constructed tracks.
