Purple Dawn is a power trio from Cologne, Germany that delivers massive, granite Doom sounds, with good riffs and a solid rhythm session. The new album “Peace & Doom Session Vol II” was released on March 11, 2022 via Electric Valley Records and contains 7 medium to long length tracks. Like its predecessor, which was well received by audiences and critics alike, this chapter was also recorded live in the studio. The album opens with the instrumental “Bonganchamun” characterized by granite riffs, powerful bass lines and a supporting drumming. Good intertwining between guitar and bass and tempo changes, which give an original imprinting to the song. The following “100 Years A Day” features powerful bass lines and good guitar textures with thick riffs. The vocal is aggressive and dynamic, while the track exudes power and the drumming marks well a timing halfway between Hard Rock and Metal. An impactful piece, engaging and enriched by tempo changes with well-constructed riffs and a good guitar solo section in the second part. “Old Fashioned Black Madness” was proposed with single with video and from the first listening I noticed how the riffs are refined and well done. A rocky track, sometimes heavy and with engaging variations and changes that manage to differentiate the sound of the band giving it a personal imprint. The instrumental parts are an added value and the song was a good choice as a single. With powerful drumming and deep, load-bearing bass lines, “Power To The People” resonates like a real anthem, with its retro riffs. A winning blend of heavy sounds, old style features and the band’s modern and original personal touch. A very engaging and interesting track with another good vocal proof. The longest track on the album “The Moon Song” exceeding 9 minutes, featuring a long intro that moves slowly and then unleashes the engaging power of the band. Riff of exquisite workmanship, driving bass lines and a drumming that supports everything, filling even the spaces to the perd3ezioen. The vocal is dynamic and expressive, best interpreting the various situations of the piece, which after a solo in the central part changes and becomes melancholic and softer. After a more delicate insert, in the finale he returns to the initial theme and closes with a crescendo, truly an exceptional piece. “Death To A Dying World” is another long-lasting track, exceeding 8 minutes, another concentrate of power, which differs from the previous one by being more Heavy. The vocal is energetic and dirty, while the plots alternate deep and more melancholic passages with heavy openings where the band releases all its power. The album ends with “Bonganchamun II” which takes up the sounds of the opening instrumental, developing the theme and adding power. An energetic and engaging closure, which leaves us with good feelings and the desire to listen to this record again in the future. A good job that enhances the sound of the band, skilled in combining the tradition of Doom with some personal and original traits. A modern and fresh album, with engaging and powerful riffs and textures and a dynamic and expressive vocal. A listening recommended for all Doom sound lovers, who will find within this record all the distinctive characteristics of the genre and what is expected from works like this.
