[Review] Single Celled Organism – Percipio Ergo Sum

Single Celled Organism is the solo project of the German multi-instrumentalist Jens Lueck who offers Progressive and Art-Rock music influenced by 70s bands. The new album “Percipio Ergo Sum” was released on May 7, 2021 and contains 11 tracks ranging from 2 to over 8 minutes in length. The opener “She’s Awake” introduces us to the album with atmospheric sounds and a delicate layered female vocal, and then develops Prog textures full of tempo changes and Symphonic traits. A song that immediately immerses us in the pleasant sounds created by the artist, influenced by the music of the past, but her personal touch makes them current and projected towards the future of the Prog genre. “The Final Door” is a long song of over 8 minutes that after an intro with ambient noises that leave room for a delicate piano arpeggio. A track where, thanks to the tempo changes, you pass from softer moments to more powerful ones, always remaining in the context of Symphonic Prog. Excellent mixes between keyboard and guitar, which also offers valuable solo cues, while the vocal alternates clean and other effected parts, resulting expressive and dynamic. The tempo changes are an added value of the piece, which presents interesting developments, a pleasant journey within these 8 minutes, during which we find excellent solo inserts. A Flydian-like intro opens “I’d Like to See” which develops with a slow rhythm and an atmosphere in the first part halfway between prog and Psychedelia. The vocal, warm and expressive, takes on more melancholy traits, an intense passage full of pathos, very well composed and executed. “Ride on a Ray” starts with ambient sounds and the chirping of birds and the track increases in intensity as the minutes go by, resulting in a good song. The rhythm session is solid and the melodic mixes of keyboard and guitar are pleasant, a smooth but elaborate passage. The dark atmospheres permeate “Doubts” a good Prog that combines tradition with the most modern sounds, inserts of solo guitar in the instrumental section. The track is enriched by the tempo changes and the piece is well structured with ethereal and dreamy atmospheres in the second part. “Save Me from Freaming” is more powerful and tighter, with pleasant intertwining of male and female voices and a pleasant guitar solo in the second part. The sounds of the storm and a melancholy piano open “I’m Not Human” which again proposes the pleasant female voice of Isgaard. With more intricate passages and the intensity that increases with the passing of the minutes it is a very intense track with excellent guitar phrasing. “Hey You” features a truly remarkable blend of sounds and styles, symphonic openings and a solid rhythm session, the synth drives the melodies. The vocal is engaging and the tempo changes an added value for the sound, which enhances the artist’s technique. The atmospheric sounds connect “Humble” to the previous one, which begins with a delicate female vocal and a soft melodic background. The shortest track, very intense and full of passion. The longest track of the album “Entanglement Runs Off” which exceeds 8 minutes in duration, develops very intense and elaborate passages of Prog. Good mixes between guitar and keyboards, showing once again the compositional and executive technique of the artist, on which a dynamic and energetic singing is inserted. Enriched with tempo changes and with a long instrumental section in the second part with the guitar at the center of the sound with good solo inserts. The album “Inhale the Dark” closes with a short passage of piano and male and female voices that intertwine, soft and with a dreamy atmosphere. A pleasant and flowing record that alternates more delicate passages with more elaborate ones, always with a Prog style contaminated by Art Rock. Good textures created by the artist, the guests add quality to the sound, and the vocal is always dynamic and expressive that interprets the various phases of the album with passion. A listening recommended for lovers of more delicate Progressive sounds and with good Symphonic cues, while not lacking solo cues and very intense elaborate plots.
