[Review] The Fur – Sonntag

The Fur is a Belgian band that offers a mix of Psychedelic, Space and Kautrock, which has released 2 full-lengths. The new album “Sonntag” was released on November 26, 2021 and contains 8 medium length tracks. The album opens with “Sagan” being the longest track at over 8 minutes in length and opens with spatial synth sounds, with the bass creating deep, leading lines. The references to the Space Rock of the 70s are present and revisited with a personal and modern touch, with the keyboards that allow different solutions. Good intertwining between synth and guitar and the song is a journey between Acid and Space skilfully mixed, sometimes increasing the intensity with distorted guitars. Follows “OSB” closer to modern Psychedelic sounds, with good guitar phrasing and a hypnotic bass line. In the central part the guitar becomes harder and more acidic giving a heavier touch to the song and offering a solo, and then concluding with a Spacy vocal insert and massive riffs on a slower drumming. “Reesmasjien” features an accelerated rhythmic session, with the guitar layering and the bass repeated and hypnotic. The atmospheres are really Space Rock, tracing the sounds of bands like Hawkwind in the 70s, with the guitar at the center of the scene with biting riffs. The repeated sounds that evolve thanks to the effects kidnap the listener taking him into deep space. The shorter track “Shake” features a killer bassline and dreamy, dilated guitar sounds that are layered, while the drumming is elaborate. A short passage with the guitar at the center of the scene and the structure enriched by the tempo changes. A tight rhythmic session and a very acid guitar open “Bake” which has its strong point in the distortions, also enriched with inserts of choral voices. The bass is driving and deep, a track full of energy and very engaging. “Mirage” begins with a synth with cosmic sounds and the sounds that evolve and increase in intensity with the passage of the song, which has a slow and softer rhythm. A lysergic track that combines the most cosmic sounds with modern Psychedelia, resulting in desert Rock at times. In the second part the guitar with the distortions becomes heavier and more acid with the sound that gains power while remaining on a pachydermic rhythm. Guitar arpeggios that layered and begins “Hawawa” a track that combines more Heavy Psych and Space sounds, with intricate textures and another killer bass line that makes you vibrate. In the central part with a change another part of the journey begins, with the addition of the synth and with the sounds that evolve creating more cosmic and dilated atmospheres. The album closes with another long song “Yage” that exceeds 8 minutes in duration, echoing the sounds of the previous one with a more acid touch. The distortions and effects permeate the sounds and the bass as always offers a convincing and supporting proof, a track that summarizes the musical concept of the band and pleasantly closes this good listening. A band that offers an album that mixes different genres and styles, a journey between Psychedelia, Acid Rock and Space with personal traits and well-structured songs. A good trip that manages to make the sounds of the 70s current, with well-developed and executed ideas. A listening recommended for lovers of Space and cosmic Psychedelia, with long instrumental textures enriched by driving effects and bass lines.
