Void Odyssey is a Stoner/Doom band originally from Bratislava in Slovakia, making their record debut in 2022 with the self-titled EP. Released on January 8, 2022 and containing 3 long tracks, theirs is entirely instrumental, massive and in line with recent releases of the genre. The opener and title track “Void Odyssey” is the shortest in duration and starts with a spoken voice that introduces us to the music made of heavy guitar riffs, leading bass lines and a powerful and sombre drum. A track that immediately plunges us into the sound atmospheres of the band, made up of catchy riffs and a pachydermic but very powerful rhythmic session, the slow pursuit of the track hypnotizes the listener who in the second part is lulled by an enveloping guitar solo. “Aberration” begins with a mystical atmosphere given by the drum toms and oriental guitar arpeggios, with a slow rhythm session with a Desert Rock style. The intensity increases with the flow of the song that releases all the power of the band in the central part, with heavy and scratchy guitar riffs. The spoken voice adds a dark touch to the song, which continues to transport the listener to distant and mystical worlds. The longest track, over 10 minutes long “Reefer Rites” closes the album, starting with a dark intertwining of guitar and deep, penetrating bass. At the 2 minute massive guitar riffs burst in and a solid rhythm session comes into play, while a short solo insert grabs our attention. The succession of dark and heavy guitar riffs follow one another for most of the song, which in the second part inserts horrifying voices in the background and then closes. An entirely instrumental EP debut in line with today’s Stoner / Doom releases, made up of heavy riffs, acidic atmospheres and a massive rhythmic session with pachydermic pressure. This band lays the foundations for interesting releases in the future, energy is not lacking and lovers of the genre will surely find in these 3 songs an interesting listen.
