“Ubik” (The Fish Factory 2022), is the new release from Sweet Hole.
What is Ubik? It is a science fiction novel written by Philip Kindred Dick, first published in 1969, in which a series of characters wander through a reality they don’t know is real, where death and premature ageing are just around the corner.
What is Ubik? It is one of the few novels or short stories by Philip K. Dick that has not been possible to adapt to film, unlike “Total Recall,” “Blade Runner” or “Minority Report,” “Ubik” presents so many aesthetic and narrative possibilities that even directors as prestigious as Michel Gondry have had to desist from their attempts to bring it to the big screen.
What is Ubik? It is the new album by the Seville Progressive Rock band Sweet Hole, a concept album composed during the pandemic and recorded in the prestigious Sputnik studios over 4 days, mixed in 3 and mastered in 1. A work made to be listened to on vinyl – although it can also be enjoyed on streaming platforms – that oozes the airs of the band’s influences: Genesis, Marillion, Rush, Deep Purple, Tool… And that counts with the participation of Tim Bowness (No-man) in one of the clips that imitate the advertisements that could be found in the novel.
What is Ubik? Around 45 minutes of music planned as a small concert, with lyrics in English that also has a physical presentation full of clues and references to the original work on which it is based, an attempt to convey the sensations produced by reading the novel but without revealing too much about its content.
