Dear readers, it is our pleasure to offer you in this article an interview with an Australian band with a Heavy and Post-Rock sound and a new album released on December 2024. We welcome Phantom Limbo.
Hi, nice to have you among our pages, how are you?
“G’day! Not bad and you?“
Me: “I’m fine, thanks.”
The band formed recently, how did the project and the choice of the name Phantom Limbo come about?
“We had been jamming for 2 or so years since 2019, trying to find our identity, then Troy, our bass player, came into the mix and we shifted from a more straightforward rock sound to something a little more out there. Now here we are in 2025 still!“
You offer a mixture of Indie, Grunge and Post-Rock among others, how did your passion for these sounds come about and how would you describe your genre?
“We kind of settle on a middle ground of “Space Rock” or “Post Rock” but we go all over the place.
We’re all pretty old by today’s standards, so the 90’s were our formative years and a lot of those influences shine through. When we jam we cover all sorts of territory, however there’s nothing better than drenching stuff in delay and feedback and distortion so that’s what we tend to do.“
The new album “Prisoner’s Cinema” was released on December 2024, how would you describe this work?
“Five years of procrastinating! We’ve been playing these songs on the album for so long but we thought it’d be a shame not to document them and we always wanted to do an LP. Having longer songs with drawn out structure also helps fill out an album a bit more!“
9 tracks with rich instrumental textures, how does the creative process of your music take place?
“We usually smoke some DMT, get naked, turn the lights down, cover ourselves in honey…
Nah just kidding. Like most bands we get into a room and jam/improv for 20 mins and pick out the best bits, usually a song will be formed out of that. Sometimes it comes from demo start to finish in good old Ableton but it will rarely be the same at the end.“
Although your music is instrumental, is there a theme that characterises this work?
“Not ALL instrumental there’s a couple of vocal tracks on there ;)(I secretly don’t enjoy singing really but Leigh and Troy make me do it)! If there was a theme it kind of comes towards the end when you start to put art and visuals to it. Our drummer came up with the song name for Prisoner’s Cinema and we voted that as the title track but we usually throw a few names around for the songs and vote and it starts to come from there. We don’t really have one theme which is sometimes a pain in the arse when doing art and stuff for the band.”0
The cover is also a fine work of art, who made it and what is the meaning of the image?
“I was browsing the old ‘gram one day and came across a thread of pictures of architecture in Hong Kong. I loved the insane repetition and colours of the imagery that they had captured, thousands of people crammed into skyscrapers, particularly that monster apartment building that we chose from photos on Flickr. Shout out to the bloke who took the photo Jonathan Leuing for making your work shareable.“
You have released a few singles in anticipation of the album, do you plan to release more from this work?
“We’ve pretty much released everything for now – there are however a couple of outtakes from the sessions that we are releasing as an EP later this year!“
Many of your fans and our readers wonder if there will be a chance to hear your music live in the near future, do you have plans in this regard?
“If you wanna see us play you’re gonna have to fly to Perth Australia at this stage, 13 June at the Seasonal Brewing Bandroom! But if you just wanna listen to us online that’s cool.”
Do you have any particular memories or anecdotes you would like to tell us about your live experiences?
“Never eat a greasy burger right before a gig.“
Music is constantly evolving, how do you see today’s scene as far as your sounds are concerned?
“It is what it is, there’s more music than ever online, listen to a band once a week you’ve never heard of, you never know what you’ll find if you click that weird cover art. Go see a band if they’re in town, go outside, buy merch, buy a pint, buy a vinyl, and if you can’t or don’t want to, that’s cool too.“
Technology is taking more and more space in making and listening to music, how do you see this technological contribution in Rock?
“Fuck AI music, but amp models and the rest is awesome. Use it for good not evil. Make what’s in your heart not your ass.“
How difficult, if at all, is it to succeed for an artist playing your sounds nowadays?
“We just do it for ourselves and appreciate those who listen to us.“
Do you have any other activities or artistic passions outside of music?
“We race hamsters in our spare time.“
I thank the band and wish them all the best for the continuation of their artistic career.
“Thanks for reaching out and appreciate your support!“
