Devin Townsend recently announced the new album “Lightwork,” due out October 28, 2022 on Inside Out Music. After months of hard work making the album and a long European tour that included two nights at London’s Royal Albert Hall the Canadian artist is pleased to present the video for the new single “Call Of The Void,” again made by Devin himself and for stream through the YouTube player below:

Devin‘s comment: “The concept of the song is based on the ‘call of the void’ as an analogy for intrusive thoughts. I first heard the term describing ‘the temptation to throw yourself over the cliff when driving a car’… or to ‘put your hand in the fire when you know you’re going to get burned’ etc… thoughts that you know are wrong but you fear you are unable to control the impulses to deny it. The point is that I often feel we have a choice and trying not to lose sight of that has been very important to me in recent times.

In terms of visuals:

During the lockdown I fell in love with the ‘train journeys’ that ‘RailCowGirl’ and others are posting on YouTube. Basically first-person trips to cold, faraway places, away from the chaos of the world, with that sense of constant momentum, have really calmed me down. Maybe being on tour for so many years is what made it a comfort to watch during this forced closure. Anyway, I started writing with these videos playing in the background in the studio, so I thought it would be appropriate for this single.

(Thank you ‘RailCowGirl’ for permission to use these clips. If while viewing this video you enjoy the footage I urge you to visit her YouTube channel and watch all her wonderful content).

As for the ‘story’ of these three videos, the character is now on the train heading to the location where the ‘Lighthouse’ is.

Here it is — second song. It talks about not being shaken by the chaos of the world around us. Trying to remain calm and overcome any adversity.

Take care =)
Dev”

After some exceptionally long years filled with personal changes and almost manic creativity, Canadian artist Devin Townsend is ready to release the follow-up to “Empath.” Assembled from a flurry of material written during the pandemic, “Lightwork” (and its companion album of B-sides and demos “Nightwork“) represents Devin in this phase of his life, post-pandemic and his reflections on what we all went through.
For “Lightwork,” Devin decided to see what would happen to include a producer (an experiment he has been enthusiastic about trying for some time) to help him with the tricky selection of all this material. He chose longtime friend GGGarth (Richardson) to help bring this idea to fruition, and through a difficult (but wonderful) process, Devin‘s new album was completed.

The title “Lightwork” represents music as well as the act of creating music, as a kind of light in the darkness while trying to overcome the seemingly endless challenges that life can often present.
When there seemed to be no way out the connection with music, family and creativity became a light in the dark, channeled entirely into this wonderful album.

The cover art for “Lightwork” was once again done by Travis Smith. The album will be released in the following formats:

Limited Deluxe Orange 3LP+2CD+Blu-ray box-set containing both ‘Lightwork’ and ‘Nightwork’, on CD and vinyl format as well as a Blu-ray with the 5.1 surround mix, a short documentary, art cards and an extended booklet
