PRJ Vol 14

PRJ Compilation Vol. XIV – Forests of the Ancient Mind” does not seek immediacy — because introspection, in all its forms, never does. This fourteenth edition moves through five distinct shades of Progressive expression, each shaped by artists who understand that depth is not merely compositional — it is atmospheric, conceptual, and deeply introspective. From the Symphonic Jazz-inflected landscapes of the UK to the narrative-driven Italian Symphonic tradition; from the Heavy Psych-Prog pulse of Berlin to the Alternative Progressive edge of France, concluding with the expansive Progressive Rock/Metal textures of New York. Five voices. All of them rooted in exploration.

Forests of the Ancient Mind” is a compilation about perception — about the inner architecture of thought, memory, and abstraction translated into sound. In 2026, Progressive is not a genre. It is a language. This volume is a document of that language in motion. Each track was selected by ear, not algorithm. Each artist carries a vision entirely their own.

Tracklist & Exclusive Quotes

01. Guy Hatton – MacDuff’s Castle
(Rochester, UK — Symphonic Jazz Prog)

Exclusive quote from the artist:

The track “MacDuff’s Castle” is typical of the eclectic approach Guy takes to bringing together a multitude of stylistic and sonic sources, from rock and jazz instrumentation to orchestral sounds and electronic sources, to create long-form compositions which genuinely take the listener on a rich and varied journey. Traditional song structures are sometimes present, but are often stretched, manipulated or even abandoned altogether in the flow of ideas.

02. Marco Maurizi – The Destruction of Sennacherib
(Italy — Symphonic Prog Concept)

Exclusive quote from the artist:

As a guitarist and composer, I think of music as a journey through distant forms, tempos, and atmospheres. For me, the essence of prog is freedom — it’s active resistance to music as consumption.

03. Rising Dao – The Vegetable King Of Nothing
(Berlin, Germany — Heavy Prog / Psych)

Exclusive quote from the band:

We are a psych-rock quintet from Berlin, brought together by a shared obsession with heavy riffs and ever-evolving song constructions. We interweave dense guitar passages, grooving and jarring rhythms and expanse soundscapes to arrange our musical potpourri – while worshiping the Jon-Lord-organ-madness. Eight years after our last album, we now return with our double album/vinyl “Zero Some Game”, which, as we think, pushes into darker, more focused territory and yet is still carrying the raw, jam-driven energy, which always fueled the way we are playing together.

04. Unité Douleur – Bag of Nails
(France — Alternative Progressive Rock)

Exclusive quote from the band:

Based in Caen, France, Unité Douleur blends alternative rock with prog/doom metal into an intense, heavy and melancholic sound. After a freezing debut EP (“Below Zero”) in November 2025, the band is now releasing its follow-up “Pollen Haze”, just in time to celebrate the vernal equinox.

05. Henry Phalen – The Eternal Descent of Winter (2026 Remix)
(New York, USA — Progressive Rock / Metal)

Exclusive quote from the artist:

This song depicts a scenario in which a frigid and seemingly endless winter falls upon a vast forest as well as a small village located within. Within the chaos, a young girl named Autumn disappears into the woods. Musically, the song contains a variety of different riffs and sections, culminating with the song’s centerpiece, a minute long atmospheric part, featuring acoustic guitars, clean electric guitars, a melody led by an e-bow, and layers of synths, thanks to my synth pedal which my guitar runs into.

Forests of the Ancient Mind” is a compilation about depth — the kind that doesn’t reveal itself instantly, but unfolds over time, demanding attention and immersion. Each of these five artists navigates that internal landscape in their own way, shaping something distinct in its voice and coherent in its vision. Symphonic Prog, Heavy Psych, Alternative Progressive, and Progressive Metal in 2026 — layered, evolving, and impossible to reduce.

This compilation was curated by Jacopo Vigezzi // Progressive Rock Journal
