Espresso is a Chilena band that fones Progressive Rock, Experimental and Fusion through long instrumental tracks. The new album “Dimensión_fractal001” was released on November 01, 20024 via Mylodon Records and contains five tracks between 2 and over 8 minutes long. The album opens with “Electro_Intro,” as the title suggests, a short introductory track characterised by electronic sounds and a futuristic vocal. The atmospheric sounds of the opener lead us towards “Kosmos,” the longest track, exceeding eight minutes in length. With its Jazz Rock traits, the band develops interesting keyboard and guitar interlacing over a solid and elaborate rhythm section, with a deep, load-bearing bass line and constantly evolving drumming. A mixture of Jazz and Prog, with the guitar playing the leading role in the first part with a technical and virtuoso solo insert with Fusion traits. In a succession of solo inserts, tempo changes and with the intensity increasing as the minutes go by, the track is a concentrate of technique and energy, enhancing the band’s compositional and performing technique, ending with a fine drum solo. A hypnotic keyboard note leads us to the following “Dimensión Fractal,” which opens with elaborate, soft Jazz sounds with the piano in evidence. The constantly evolving rhythm section is enriched with tempo changes, allowing influences from different genres and styles to mix. In a continuous musical crescendo, the band develops the central theme between prolonged solos with first the guitar in evidence and then the keyboards, with a second part of the song that explores a more Experimental and Progressive side of the band’s sound. After the continuous musical crescendo of the previous one, “If_Then_Else (beta)” opens with an electronic keyboard sound and a funky bass line. The dumming is elaborate and creates a good mixture with the bass in the rhythm section. The keyboards drive the sound with intertwining guitar arpeggios, giving the piece a retro feel. The continuous tempo changes are an added value to the structure of the track, which moves from Prog moments to the most accelerated and technical Fusion to Jazzy openings, always enhancing the band’s technique both in composition and especially in performance in this case. A hypnotic guitar melody and a mellotron background open “Cooler,” the track that concludes the album. Markedly progressive, with technical and elaborate phrasing, continuous tempo changes and a sound that combines retro and modern atmospheres thanks to the band’s personal touch. In a continuous musical crescendo, in the second part the band develops virtuoso solo inserts that accompany us to the finale. An album that offers a blend of Jazz Rock, Fusion and Progressive Rock with long instrumental textures and virtuosity that enhance the technique of the artists involved. The Jazz and Fusion component is more pronounced, proposing a solid and well-constructed sound, with just the right amount of virtuoso passages and others more accessible. A recommended listen for all lovers of the more elaborate and Jazz sonroities of Prog, with forays into Fusion and long instrumental textures and virtuso solos.
