Kaleidobolt is a Finnish band with Progressive and Psychedelic Rock sounds with reminiscences of Heavy music of the early 70s. The new album “This One Simple Trick” was released on May 06, 2022 via Svart Records and contains 7 medium-long tracks. The album opens with “Fantastic Corps” a powerful track, with massive guitar riffs and a monilitic rhythm session, enriched with accelerations and tempo changes. The vocal is dynamic and alternates the solo parts with engaging choral refrains, while the sound with a marked Heavy Rock and Proto-Metal imprinting changes in the central part. In the instrumental section that characterizes the second part, in fact, we find the major Progressive ideas, with good solo plots, and then in the final return to the initial theme and close with a crescendo. The following “I Should Be Running” is characterized by a long introductory part with softer and more Psychedelic sounds, with an expressive and enveloping vocal. With a change to 2 minutes they accelerate to return to the heavier and accelerated rhythmic features that characterized the first part of the previous song. Enriched with elaborate textures and solo cues, the second part offers an instrumental section full of tempo changes, with the bass in evidence. “Merja-Liisa” is a track that shows a more late 60s-inspired facet of the band’s sound and softer traits. Deep and bearing bass lines, intertwining guitar and keyboards and an engaging vocal mainly choral, the track is engaging and offers a solid sound. An accelerated, riding-style rhythm session opens “Weekend Warrior,” developed with distorted and sombre guitar riffs, where a choral vocal is inserted. A track that has reminiscences of the Proto-Metal of the past, especially in the faster parts, offering a good mix of retro and modern sounds, always with their personal and original touch. Exceeding 7 minutes of “Borded Control” duration, it begins with a dark and atmospheric introductory part, with lysergic features and slow pressing. With the entry of all the instruments, the track comes alive and the sound develops on massive guitar riffs and with a solid rhythm session. Enter duanque a dynamic vocal that interprets the song with energy, while the tempo changes enrich the structure of the track, with Heavy Rock features. In the finale there is space for an instrumental section that laterna softer and Spanish parts to accelerated, a strong impact and very engaging piece. With a granite intertwining of guitar riffs and a solid rhythm session with a killer bassline opens “Ultraviolent Chimpanzee,” a winning blend of Heavy Rock and Prog. The band alternates softer passages with openings where they release all their energy and power, also showing an excellent compositional and executive technique. The vocal is warm and expressive, while the music is elaborate and very intense, with refined passages, managing to mix the hardest features with the most sophisticated ones of their sound. The album closes with the longest running track “Walk on Grapes” which follows the sound of the previous one, managing to combine the hardest features with the most sought after of the band’s sound. Alternating soft passages with others that are more powerful and enriched by distortions, the track develops on continuous tempo changes and elaborate plots. The vocal is intense, alternating with precision to the instrumental sections, giving life to a final track very close to the Heavy Prog and with very marked personal traits. A band that offers an energetic and engaging album, with a granite and refined sound that combines Heavy Rock sounds with forays into Prog and Proto-Metal. With marked personal traits that distinguish their sound, they are characterized by powerful and elaborate rhythmic sessions with killer basslines, massive guitar riffs and an excellent vocal, dynamic and always very expressive. A recommended listening for lovers of the more hybrid sounds of Heavy Rock, mixing Pychedelia and Prog with hints of Proto-Metal, a very interesting band, with original ideas and sound.
