[Review] Kaschalot – Anemoia

Kaschalot is an Estonian one-man band that offers a mix of genres between Math and Post-Rock with forays into Hardcore, all instrumental. The new album, titled “Anemoia” is due out on April 08, 2025 and contains 8 tracks between 3 and 6 minutes long. An album that contains complex and elaborate textures, developed with melodic openings that make even the most intricate passages accessible. The artist is also adept at keeping the listener’s intensity and concentration high, while enhancing his compositional and performing technique. The union between the different genres is well accomplished, evolving the central theme of the tracks by exploring the different facets that characterise their style. A fresh and modern listen, which confirms how this artist has evolved and consolidated his sound over time with each record release. A style that stands out for its solid and intricate rhythm sections, enriched by continuous tempo changes and load-bearing bass lines. The guitar offers good work in both riffs and layering as well as in solo cues, at times virtuosic. An album that certainly reserves some ‘new’ or ‘hidden’ cues or passages at each listening, given the large number of elements that the artist inserts to enrich the textures of his music. Long and intricate passages enhance the artist’s compositional and performing technique. An emotional album developed with continuous tempo changes that alternate more frenetic and virtuosic passages with openings that are still technical but with a softer and more melodic touch. The always high intensity, as well as the complexity of the textures, make this album one of the most interesting releases of its kind this year so far. This album is certainly an excellent listen, recommended for lovers of this type of instrumental sound straddling Math and Post-Rock, passing through the most melodic Hardcore.
