The Norwegian band Sykofant, which we have been appreciating on our pages for some time now, returns almost a year after their previous release with a new studio work. Titled “Red Sun EP,” it was released on March 20, 2025 and contains three tracks for over 22 minutes of music. An extended guitar intro opens “Ashes,” evolving into a Progressive Rock piece enriched by continuous tempo changes. Guitar textures are at the heart of the project, alternating with dynamic vocals, developing into a solid piece between Heavy Rock and Prog. The band’s personal style is emphasised in both composition and performance, offering a mature and convincing track enriched by a duet between the two guitars in the second half. The title track “Red Sun,” is also the shortest, still exceeding six minutes in length. With the guitar always in evidence, through the long instrumental textures and vocal parts the band traces retro sounds with a marked Floydian imprint. With a pleasant alternation of choral and melodic vocal parts and pathos-laden guitar solos, the band accompanies us to the finale. The tracklist ends with “Embers,” the longest track on the album, returning to more modern and personal sounds. An incisive vocal, elaborate guitar textures and a structure full of tempo changes mark the more Progressive parts, which alternate with Experimental openings. Enriched by choral vocals and modulations and effects, the track explores and incorporates the different facets that characterise the band’s style. Another good record release for this band, which confirms the good things heard previously. Between modern and retro, the band’s Progressive Rock manages to find the right meeting point between the different eras. A recommended listen for Progressive Rock lovers with the guitar as the protagonist and long instrumental textures that enhance the band’s technique.
