Mud Spencer is a one-man band that offers Stoner and Doom sounds originally from Indonesia. After releasing two singles, on January 21, 2022 he released the debut album “Fuzz Soup” via Argonauta Records. It contains 11 tracks between 2 and 5 minutes in duration, entirely instrumental and played by Sergio Garcia, the mind behind the project. The album opens with “Razana” which was the first single released, featuring Fuzzy guitar riffs and rhythmic drumming with elaborate fills. A track that immediately plunges us into the Psychedelic sounds of the disc, with the guitar at the center of the scene. With a slower rhythm and Doom-like sound “Back To Origin” features massive riffs and continuous tempo changes, with the guitar offering lead inserts. The effects are an added value of the sound and Sergio is skilled in modulation. An acid journey, with tempo changes that exacerbate the sounds and the guitar is a great protagonist both in the riffs and in the solo inserts. We arrived at the title-track “Fuzz Soup” a mix of Doom sounds with 70s Psychedelia and a touch of Occult sounds, creating an enveloping atmosphere. Good tempo changes, an added value for the track with driving and distorted bass lines and the free guitar to lead us into the maze of the sounds of Mud Spencer. “Quest For Fire” is tighter and releases all of Sergio’s energy, the bass is load-bearing and the riffs are accelerated, with penetrating solo inserts. A granite track with solid drumming between acceleration and tempo changes, an engaging and dynamic track with a valuable use of effects and distortions. With a slower intro of about 1 minute “Ride The Mammoth” with a tempo change accelerates and offers a distorted and pulled boogie with a killer bass line. Excellent intertwining between guitar and organ, a track with a strong impact that increases the intensity in the final guitar solo with acidic features. “Argapura” envelops us with its lysergic sounds, taking us back to the 60s, with a modern and personal touch of the artist. From the pachydermic rhythm and with a wide use of the effects it kidnaps us, taking us into the atmosphere of the Psychedelic festivals of the past. Atmospheric sounds open “The Shelter” with drops of water and a slow rhythm, a hypnotic bass and distorted guitars to the extreme. A track with lo-fi sounds, a Stoner with a lysergic flavor, which increases in intensity with the passing of the minutes and with the modulation of the guitar. The bass makes the body vibrate and the guitar is scratchy, with a tight drumming characterize “Surfin The Dune,” where Desert and Stoner mix with Sergio’s personal touch. A monolithic track with a strong impact, with a precious use of effects, taking us among the dunes, which it is impossible to resist. “The Cheating Mole” is a mix of percussion, a Funky rhythm with the addition of the organ, effects and a hypnotic bass line. The changes and the fusion of multiple genres and styles are very interesting, an original track that explores and makes us explore new horizons and in the final it acidifies with a guitar insert. “Tumulus” features a Lazy Blues-style guitar, a slow rhythm with the addition of percussion, and then increases in intensity with a change. Riff Doom dominate the sound, slow and powerful drumming, with the guitar offering a sustained solo both acoustic and distorted. Enriched by tempo changes and repeated effected sounds, in the final it accelerates and closes with a section close to Metal. The album ends with “Narcolepsy” from pachydermic rhythm and distorted guitar and keyboard sounds. It follows the modern sounds halfway between Doom and Stoner mainly, with extensive use of effects, heavy and overwhelming, concludes this good work. A good debut for Mud Spencer, which touches on multiple genres and styles attributable to Stoner and Doom, managing to blend past and modern sounds with his personal touch. He makes extensive use of effects and distortions with technique and quality and the result is an engaging record. A listening recommended for lovers of the modern sounds of Psychedelia, which alternates more drawn to slower tracks, with the guitar at the center of the sound.
