Richard Pinhas has been a pioneer of the French music scene for over five decades, both with the band Heldon in the 70s and after as a solo artist. He is an excellent guitarist, keyboard player and composer, always at the forefront of breaking genre barriers and putting his own style into exploring new sounds. “Winter Music part 1 & 2” is a suite divided into two sections of over 11 minutes each, originally intended for his 1979 solo album ’Iceland.’ Subdivided at the time due to its long duration, it was first released on the expanded 1997 CD reissue. This new edition, edited by OtherSide Records, was released on August 02, 2024 in the form of an EP titled “Winter Music” and contains both parts of the suite. “Winter Music Part 1” opens with interweaving keyboards, where the artist experiments with and layers synth sounds, creating ether atmospheres. The electronic imprinting, if placed in the period in which it was conceived, 1979, shows how Richard was a pioneer of certain sounds. Long soundscapes of electronic keyboards, in line with the releases of the time with references to Kosmishce Musik and the leading synth. The following “Winter Music Part 2” opens again with deep synth sounds and Ambient traits. The modulations of the sounds allow the central theme of the piece to evolve, enhancing Richard‘s research and experimentation in the electronic field. An EP that offers a suite combining Electronic and Experimental Music through the use and modulation of futuristic keyboard sounds. If we consider that it was conceived in 1979, this work is certainly pioneering and ahead of its time. A recommended listen for lovers of keyboard-centred Experimental Electronic sounds, in line with the Kosmische Musik releases of the second half of the 1970s.
