Dear readers, we are pleased to offer you the interview with a young French band, who released in May 2022 an EP recorded live, entitled “Lift Off.” Welcome Dirty Shades.
First of all welcome how are you?
Hi, everything is great on our side, we are very happy to talk about our latest release, which is
very dear to our heart.
You are a young band that offers Psychedelich / Space Rock sounds. Where does your passion for this music come from?
The passion that we pour in our music truly comes from our childhood, each and everyone of us can not remember a time without music in our home. We’ve been listening to rock for a really long time from 70 ’s acid rock to more modern garage and math rock, but our Psychedelic / Space sound is the result of those influences and us experimenting with time.
You have released two interesting EPs that mix retro and modern sounds, what are your sources of inspiration?
Our inspiration is rooted in the band that we had the chance to see locally like Lysistrata or Mars Red Sky, but also more widely band like The Psychotic Monks, Slift or King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard.
Your new EP “Lift Off” was recorded in a library, how did the idea for the album come about?
From the start we’ve been following a concept of spatial exploration, with Specific Impulse our first EP and now Lift Off. For this EP we’ve also wanted to be really close to our audiences and to our truest live energy. For those two reasons, we choose the library, it suits our concept as a kind of research laboratory and it allows us to be close to each-other, and to feel the energy of our bandmates.
Elaborate tracks full of ideas, how would you describe your new EP?
We would describe it as spontaneous and truthful. We’ve recorded live for our sincerity to be felt at the first listen. The first track “Ignition” is to be listened as a kind of research or a warming of the engine as its name entailed. “Dazed”, follows with energy and impact, a real kick off on our journey. “Running For Your Life” is more rooted and angry. For the last track it’s more about feeling and letting us feel our own questioning and pain.
Your music is sought after, what themes do the lyrics deal with?
The lyrics on the three last tracks are written by our lead singer Anouk. In sync with our young generation, the lyrics talk of loneliness, self-introspection, toxic relations and injustice. We try to talk of universal theme that we four all feel as we discover ourselves and the world. We don’t try to bring answers, we are just witnesses.
Will there be the possibility to listen to your music live? Do you have any plans for this?
For now we only have gigs booked in the south west of France. You can find us in October in Bordeaux, Pau, Agen, Mont de Marsan and Bergerac.
Your first two EPs were well received by the public, are you planning a full-length in the near future?
We are composing a LP for next Year, as you read this interview. For now we’re set on releasing in it in Winter 2023.
Yours is a genre that has its roots in the 70s and has evolved over the years, how do you see the future of your musical genre?
On this subject we don’t try to be stuck in one genre, if our next tracks are less psychedelic we will adapt. Our influences can change, just as our sensibility. We let ourselves evolve with our life and musical discovery. We don’t think of music as set in stones.
I thank this young and promising band for the pleasant interview, wishing them the best for the continuation of their artistic career.
