Dear readers, in this article we have the pleasure to offer you an interview with a Spanish band with sounds of Psychedelic, Space and more. We welcome The Silver Linings.
Hello, how are you?
Javi: “We are great, we are The Silver Linings.“
What is the meaning of the name of your band The Silver Linings?
Javi: “Glad to answer that, otherwise the previous answer would sound a bit conceited, haha. It comes from an english expression, āEvery cloud has a silver liningā, which basically means that on every negative situation in your life, there is a bright side to it. Having said that, we ain’t planning on doing a cover of Monty Python’s āalways look on the bright side of lifeā⦠as of today.“
Your sound incorporates elements of different genres between Psychedelia and Space Rock, where does your passion for this music come from?
Cati: “This interest comes from waaay back. We all have in common the constant presence of music in our lives, like a film with background music. Some films are more lysergic and bluesy, others more spacey or heavy, including even electronics (good ones, haha) but we all share the experience of discovery, at a young age, of sounds that opened doors for us, and the need to spread the word on this side of music and existence.
Your debut album “Pink Fish” was released on October 11, 2023, how would you describe this work?
Cati: “I would describe this work as a message of authenticity and love. We had fun and we hope the listener has fun too, without the pressure of diving into an intricate world of incomprehensible chords and dark, desperate messages. Weāve had enough of that. It’s a work that has a lot to do with who we are and what we want in life; to keep it simple, embrace the good and the bad, as no one’s perfect and nothing lasts forever: just have a good goddamn time!“
Very intense instrumental and vocal parts, what themes do the lyrics deal with?
Javi: “There is a bit of everything there. If you go song by song, you’ve got Sci-fi on a few songs (Cosmic Excursions, Pink Fish, Life Force), then āHeart Full of Goldā which goes deep into more emotional stuff and how we often get lost along the way. āA Pleasant tripā¦ā which talks about these annoying/fake spiritual charlatans and how you end up taking acid to be able to have fun in the company of one of them⦠it’s a bit of a joke, ok, donāt do drugs at home, kiddos! Do āem outside I mean, haha. āPatient Mā is based upon the real story of a republican soldier who was shot in the head and remained alive but seeing the world completely upside down under certain circumstances, and last but not least,āIn the fleetingā¦ā which goes about travelling around the world with the one you love.“
Long instrumental textures enriched by tempo changes and solo inserts, how does the creative process of your music take place?
Cati: “The creative process of our music happens mainly during rehearsals. Each of us brings a piece of the puzzle, and we work together to put the pieces together and create something solid, most of the time through improvisation, with a whole lot of laughter in the mix.“
Your sound is very involving, will there be a chance to hear you live in the near future?
Javi: “Hell yes! Thatās the idea. We are now closing dates for 2023/2024, so we truly hope that you can see us making some noise here and there ASAP. Make some room in Italy too.“
Spain is establishing itself with several bands in the rock scene, how do you see the current scene in your country?
Cati: “It fills us with joy to see how vibrant the current scene is; we have very interesting projects in Spain. Our label mates, Moura, are mind blowing, just like Cachemira, Mia Turbia, Saturnia ⦠The entire Iberian peninsula is buzzing with psychedelia: from our neighboring country Portugal (where Iām from) there are bands like The Black Wizards or Asimov, which are worth a good listen. Many jams and gems out there to be discovered, thatās for sure.“
Do you have any other passions or artistic activities outside of music?
“We could consider ourselves collectors of experiences, we all live creative lives. We enjoy photography, video/image, deep reading, non-mainstream movies, philosophy, visiting remote places, walking through the countryside, learning from our pets and our children, cooking, role-playing games, and try to make our own jobs as rewarding as possible. We’re called The Silver Linings, but we could have also been called No Comfort Zone, haha“
What advice would you give to young artists approaching music in a more sophisticated genre such as yours?
Javi: “Well, the advice is fairly simple. Just do what you gotta do. I don’t see our genre as more sophisticated to be honest. Different? Maybe, but sophisticated, nah. It’s just fun, messing around, opening edges and having a laugh with your friends. When I see bands like Frankie & the Witch Fingers or King Gizzard playing live, I just think of having fun and dancing. I Hope people feel the same about TSL when we play live.“
Music is constantly evolving, how do you see the future of your genre?
Cati: “I see the future of our genre a bit like the future of humanity: it will depend on the amount of love we put into what we are doing, and the ability to open our minds. Let’s hope that psychedelia remains real and similar to an acid trip, where you never know where it will take you⦓
I would like to thank The Silver Linings and Spinda Records for the interview and the opportunity to listen to and review their debut album, wishing them all the best for the continuation of their artistic career.
“Thank you. We wish you peace, love and prosperity.“
