[Review] Sloth Metropolis – The Moth Necropolis

Sloth Metropolis is a Glasgow band with mythological themes, which combine Progressive and Psychedelic sounds with a Folk touch. The new album “The Moth Necropolis” reveals a new and shadowy figure – the Moth of the Necropolis. In an attempt to pin down the Moth, a paranormal investigator pieces together clues from cryptozoology, astrobiology, science fiction and the starry-eyed prophecies of Timothy Leary. The album was released on February 23, 2022 via Nasoni Records and contains 5 tracks including between 4 and over 12 minutes in length. The “Fungus” opener is characterized by an intertwining of distorted sounds with a ’70s prog-style organ and deep bass lines. The rhythmic session slowly marks the time, while a prolonged solo takes the scene in the first part of the piece. Developing this plot in the second part highlights the keyboards and the track immediately plunges us into the pleasant sounds showing the more progressive side of the band, with strong 70s references. The longest track on the album “Moth” starts with a spoken vocal and drumming to which an organ background is added. After a minute of intro, the track develops a theme with deep percussion and sounds and the vocal adds a mystical and occult touch to the sound. The track flows slowly and the sound envelops us slowly until we find ourselves completely immersed in their world between guitar and violin solos of fine workmanship. A succession and intertwining of original soloist sounds and inserts that enhance the band’s compositional and executive technique. “Flea” is characterized by another spoken intro, developing here more experimental plots that blend with a mystical and oriental atmosphere. a succession of distorted sounds and experiments that touch the most extreme borders of Rock and Prog music, with a hypnotic violin and a wisely dosed modulation of the effects. A fine blend of organ and violin opens “Bacterium,” featuring an intricate rhythmic session with a leading bass line. Even the technique is enhanced in the long instrumental textures, full of pulled and distorted solo passages, recalling the Heavy Prog sounds of the 70s in the organ textures. The most experimental features of the band are found in the central part where an engaging duet of solos accompanies us for a long part, resulting in the return of the initial theme. A long instrumental track that contains all the sound and stylistic characteristics of the band, skilled in mixing multiple genres and styles. The album ends with “Starseed” which is the shortest track, featuring a frenetic rhythmic session with a vocoder enriched singing. A winning and energetic blend of Heavy Prog and personal traits of the band, offering a rhythmic and engaging song that brings back the atmosphere of the 70s to the present day. A listening that continues and evolves the musical discourse undertaken by the band in the previous albums, with long instrumental sections that enhance the ideas and techniques of the artists involved. Skilled in bringing the Heavy Prog sounds of the ’70s to the present day, revisited with a personal touch and instrumentation enriched by the violin. A listening recommended for all lovers of Prog sounds with harder strokes and elong textures of organ and electric violin and the right amount of occultism.
